MANGA REVIEWS

Card Captor Sakura
Release date: Spring 1999

CLAMP, the all-woman group of manga artists, has had several of their manga titles turned into animation, including RAYEARTH, TOKYO BABYLON, and of course, X. The success rate of CLAMP's titles thus far has resulted in a near-fanatic attitude about their work. When CARD CAPTOR SAKURA was announced for television, it was met with wild praise and anticipation, and now that the television series has proven successful, it will join the ranks of titles that make the leap from the small to the large screen this spring.
One day teenager Kinomoto Sakura stumbled upon a book called The Clow, which changed her life forever. However, after scattering the magical Clow cards, she begins a quest to recover them all. Tomoyo makes all of her costumes and video tapes her adventures. Touya is her pesky older brother who knows more than she thinks, and Yukito is a guy that Sakura has a crush on. And of course, there's Kero-chan, who offers advice and assistance to Sakura on her adventures. After recovering all the cards at the end of the first season of the series, Sakura has finally become their true owner.
Due to its popularity, the series will return for a second season in April. In addition, the movie is slated for a late spring release as well.

Taiho Shichau Zo! The Movie
Release Date: Spring 1999

Natsumi and Miyuki are traffic officers for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. However, their lives are much more exciting than those of ordinary traffic cops. Having already appeared in an OVA and a television series, the silver screen is the next logical destination for these two cops on the fast track. However, can they cut the mustard in a movie that will break with the tradition of the manga and previous anime?

The Movie

Natsumi and Miyuki make their debut on the large screen. After returning from some training, they return to their station only to find that the traffic signals have gone haywire. Together, they find a mysterious disk that they confiscate from a smuggling ring. As they race to unravel this mystery, one of the Tokyo bridges blows up, and their boss is arrested. In addition to the more immediate threat of the traffic control system going haywire, Natsumi and Miyuki must now also unravel a conspiracy that extends farther than either of them could have imagined. And they have a time limit too, because if they don't catch the bad guys in time, then all of the bridges in Tokyo will be blown up, bringing one of the world's largest and most powerful cities to a complete standstill.
While many of the previous staff, including character designer Nakajima Atsuko, return for this latest outing, the tone of the movie is much more serious than any of the preceding TAIHO anime. How will fans like this newer, more serious TAIHO? Although the preliminary buzz is good, it remains to be seen whether the movie will be as arresting as everyone would like to believe.
